Role overview
CEG Digital wishes to engage the services of an Online Tutor for their MSc Psychology Conversion course run in partnership with Portsmouth Online.
Online Tutors play a central role in the day-to-day success and vibrancy of the university’s online courses and are a consistent presence in the modules to which they are assigned and are usually the first point of contact for academic queries from students. Each Online Tutor will have a group of up to 30 students.
This is a flexible, part-time role and it is estimated that during a typical week, each student group may need approximately ten hours of online tutoring, although flexibility is required in order to accommodate busy periods such as assessment. Note that there will be key dates and contact points you will be required to adhere to which are driven by assessment dates in the course calendar. Full details will be provided prior to the start of the module.
The Course
This exciting new MSc conversion course has been developed to equip students with a wide range of specialist skills in a welcoming, flexible environment. The course content includes the core principles of a range of perspectives within psychology, the ethical and sociocultural issues that are relevant to evaluating theories and research findings, and a range of skills for investigating experiences and behaviours. Students will also have the opportunity to remotely access a range of specialist tools, learn how to carry out empirical studies and master how to analyse, present and evaluate quantitative and qualitative data as well as final research findings.
The Module
Brain, Mind and Cognition (January 2023 start)
This module introduces students to the cognitive and biological perspectives within psychology, as two of the core topic areas of the BPS curriculum. Students will engage with the experimental methodologies and scientific rigour of cognitive psychology, while debating its limitations and real world applications. This will culminate in students completing a quantitative research report on a cognitive psychology experiment using APA formatting. Additionally, students will be explore the applications of biology and neuroscience to psychology, learning about the different human and animal physiological recording methods and their ethical implications. Their biological knowledge will prepare them for an assessed group work exercise, where students create a series of short articles to promote the public communication of science.
Future modules
Expressions of interest are also welcome from applicants with expertise relevant to a future module of the course. Applicants are very welcome to apply for either or for both modules
Social and Developmental Influences in Psychology (May 2023 start)
This module looks at two key sub-domains of psychology from the BPS curriculum: social psychology and developmental psychology. Students learn about modern advances in theoretical approaches, as well as the concepts and values that have influenced the methodologies and discourse of each domain. These lead to students completing a research report in developmental psychology, where they study parental influences. Additionally, students will compose a funding application for an academic, industry, or innovation grant within the field of social psychology.
